This is what you get when you ask for a free research report: we find a signal in public store data, an AI checks each point on the web, and the verdict is only ever “build” or “don’t build”, with the conditions written into it. Below is a real report (internal ranks and raw data removed). It can be wrong; tell us if it is.

结论Verdict

— as a short project to validate the method, not as a revenue project.

Are the leaders leaving a problem users would switch for?

Can it be solved? Yes. The leading extension has been stuck on “Loading…” on Netflix for a long time, and the community has found why: after Netflix changed its player, the subtitle data fields were renamed while the extension still looks for the old ones, and its speech recognition depends on its own server. Users who patched one field mapping themselves got it working again, so it is solvable in the front end. The second leading extension also stopped showing subtitles for many users in June–July 2026.

Will users switch? Yes, but the window is short. These users don’t want “something better”; they had something that worked and now it doesn’t, and switching extensions costs them almost nothing.

How users find us: high-intent searches already exist (“… alternative”, “netflix dual subtitles”, “netflix subtitles not working”); then ratings for “actually works on Netflix, free tier not crippled” carry it up the store.

Product plan

For desktop Chrome users learning languages from shows on Netflix / YouTube: reliable dual subtitles + hover lookup + a word list. The difference from the best existing option is not more features but “stable on Netflix, a free tier that isn’t crippled, honest pricing” (the other leader was criticised for a 15-minute trial and constant “trial expired” pop-ups). Version one does only dual subtitles and lookup, translating with Chrome’s built-in Translator API (stable since Chrome 138), so there is no server cost.

Common checks

Read only the subtitle text the player already hands to the browser; no DRM, decryption, stream capture or video download, and no cracking anyone’s trial. Netflix’s terms broadly prohibit “inserting code”; we found no case of an account banned for a subtitle extension, but this is a grey area, not a safe one.
Version one is front-end only, but every Netflix player change has to be followed: a permanent cost.
High-intent and “alternative” searches in the store plus ratings; no reliance on featured slots.
Validating the method: a clear opening, quick to build, easy to measure (installs, ratings, retention). Low revenue ceiling; not a main revenue bet.
